Freshers Week
27th September to 1st October 2010
Newcastle Wilderness Medicine Society runs a packed schedule of wilderness medicine trips and events throughout the year.
In the past the programme has included small group ABC/BLS teaching sessions, evening talks from inspiring doctors working in developing countries and extreme environments, and outdoor activities such as walking, climbing, orienteering, mountain biking and off-road driving. Some of the society favourites are weekend residentials to destinations including Glencoe, the Cairngorms, Lake District, North York Moors and local treasures, the Cheviots and Northumberland. These have included navigation, winter skills and ABC/BLS training and where possible, we have visited local medical services, in particular, mountain rescue.

Freshers Week

For new freshers, so much is going on! Come and visit us during Freshers Week at the society fair, and find out more about what we do and how to get involved. As a society we pride ourselves on being very open and friendly. Trips are a great way to meet people from all years, have fun and get out into the stunning countryside that the North East and Scotland have to offer. So enjoy Freshers week and GET INVOLVED!
Wilderness Pub Meal
6th October 2010
After a manic Freshers Week, we’ll be going on a little jolly out to Corbridge. This is a chance to get away from Newcastle for the afternoon, find out what we're about, and meet some like minded people. And most importantly, finish in a good old English Country pub! We'll meet at the union and get the train out to Hexham (£5.60). Watch this space for more details - or speak to us at Freshers Week.
Marines
9th to 10th October 2010
This was an event we ran for the first time last year. So you think your tough enough to spend the night with the ROYAL MARINES? NWMS will be travelling up to Otterburn where we'll leave all of civilisation for 24 hours, take all but a knife and what you're standing in go and survive! After a quick lecture in survival techniques, fires and shelters will be built using whatever you can find in the forest. Then it's time for dinner, but first you've got to kill it should you wish to each a chicken and rabbit stew. Finally a night under the stars before returning to civilisation where you really do appreciate the home comforts of modern life!
Society Sign-Up Deadline - 4PM!

In order for the society to grow, maintain kit and provide subsidised weekends away, we rely on the union for money. The more people who sign-up to NWMS before 4pm on 11th October the more money we have to spend on trips and training. Membership is £10, but the union give extra money for each person who joins by today. DON'T DELAY - SIGN-UP TODAY!

More details to follow - previous talks have been given by Northumberland Mountain Rescue, Mountaineer Tim Emmett and The Army, on what it takes to be an expedition medic and more. Watch this space.
National Wilderness Conference
30th to 31st October 2010
The annual national conference, this year hosted by our friends down in Bristol. A great way to meet people from other unis, make some good contacts and hear some amazing speakers. The format often entails lectures, workshops and seminars on the Saturday a big social Saturday evening then an outdoor practical on the Sunday before driving back. We'll be taking a minibus from Newcastle.
Trip to the Western Lakes
6th to 7th November 2010
This promises to be a great weekend, a chance to explore the Lake District, to get away from Newcastle and have some fun. We're still planning this one, but will most likely involve a number of adventure activities. Watch this space.
Mountain Rescue Weekend

Wilderness Toughguy Challenge
30th January 2011
Ever fancied doing Tough Guy, the infamous hard-as-nails obstacle course near Birmingham? We're hoping to enter a team for the second year running. It'll push you to your mental limits, breaking through ice, swimming in under water muddy tunnels, but it's an immense weekend of fun! Get ready to enter TOUGH GUY 2011.
